Respiratory viruses

The group regularly offers training opportunities to students (Masters and Theses). Training on laboratory techniques by trainees from countries in the sub-region is also carried out by the VR group. The CNR influenza is also called upon by WHO in the establishment of a surveillance network and training in diagnostic tools for respiratory viruses (particularly for influenza) in most African countries. International training workshops are also organized by the group in collaboration with international partners (WHO, CDC).

Rabies and viral encephalitis

The "Rabies and Encephalitis" group is involved in the supervision and training of students or trainees within the framework of agreements with local universities or collaborations with universities or international partners. In addition, this group participates in the organization of workshops and international courses for the diagnosis and assessment of the burden of rabies in Africa.

the Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar as part of the Masters in Virology, Epidemiology and Entomology (2) welcomes Senegalese and International students and interns as part of Masters and Doctoral Thesis theses and (3) organizes training workshops within the framework of collaborations or at the request of WHO. Indeed, training workshops on molecular diagnosis of Ebola virus disease were organized several times between 2014 and 2016 as part of a European project (EUWAM-Lab) in which the UAVFH participated.

Respiratory viruses

The main research theme of the respiratory virus (VR) group is the study of the viral etiology of acute respiratory infections and rash fevers in Senegal. Research activities are strongly linked to the activities of the CNRs it hosts and are grouped into 4 main areas: (1) Molecular epidemiology, (2) VR impact in terms of seasonality, morbidity, hospitalizations, associated mortality, etc. (3) Study of the effectiveness of influenza vaccines. (4) Ecology of influenza viruses of avian origin (A / H5, A / H7 or A / H9) and the risk of their transmission / adaptation to humans.

Rabies and viral encephalitis

The "Rabies and Encephalitis" group of the IPD's Virology Center is interested in viral etiologies potentially involved in acute encephalitis in humans. They constitute a real public health problem, since they are associated with a high rate of morbidity and mortality. The current state of knowledge on these conditions still remains in deficit on the continent. The research projects carried out within the group aim to provide a better understanding of the epidemiology of viral encephalitis in West Africa in general, and in Senegal in particular.

Arbovirus and hemorrhagic fever virus

In the field of research, 6 major themes are developed in the unit:

    • the development and improvement of diagnostic tools,
    • the study of virus-vector interactions,
    • molecular evolution and phylogeny,
    • modeling and assessment of the risks of emergence of AVFH,
    • the identification and characterization of new viruses
    • the development of vaccine approaches
